Landscape study and preliminary design of the environmental mitigation works for the new Monteromano East – Civitavecchia road

The preliminary design was preceded by a wide-ranging study and analysis phase aimed at identifying the corridor in which the new road would have the least impact on the landscape and the environment. Attention to the natural and landscape features of the area took concrete form in multidisciplinary design work, which led to the precise, agreed definition of the planting, environmental techniques and construction methods that accompany the road, improving how it sits in the landscape and mitigating its environmental impact. The design of the landscape integration works took many aspects into account. The aim was neither to define a generic “green work” subordinate to the road design, nor to think about how to “hide” the road from view. In this project the landscape works were conceived and developed in close coordination with the engineering side of the design team, so that the road would fit as harmoniously as possible into its context and connect with the landscape through the planting. In short, we never lost sight of the main design objectives, which are essentially ecological and landscape-related. The ecological objective is to limit as far as possible the fragmentation that a road inevitably causes in the territory. The landscape objective focuses on how the road is perceived in the landscape, identifying the works that can mitigate its disturbance and shaping the road with landforms and planting, to the point of making it a positive landscape feature in its own right (an ambitious but achievable goal).
