Restoration of Via Campomorto
The project restored the whole street, reorganising vehicle and pedestrian routes; at its heart was the renewal of the paving and planting strips, as the street had long been an avenue without trees in the middle of a mainly residential neighbourhood. The scheme redefined the green spaces and the new verges. The new paving consists of granite slabs forming a side band along the whole street and a central strip, with the rest paved in coarse river cobbles. Together with the regeneration of Via Campo Morto, the churchyard of Santa Maria Assunta, directly next to the street, was also restored. Because of its position, the fabric linking the church with the road and the cycle and pedestrian path had to be stitched back together. The project focused mainly on the paving. So as not to alter too much the formal character of the site, which makes it recognisable and ties it to the neighbourhood’s memory, we kept the existing shape of the main path, edging it with new Rosso Verona slabs and replacing the central paving with granite slabs. The old gravel surface was replaced with new compacted gravel.
